    More than just a Symbol

As a second-year Graphic and Web Design student at John Abbott College, I’ve started to understand that logos and stickers are much more than just small drawings or decorations. They are a way of communicating an idea, creating an identity, and making something recognizable. However, their importance is often underestimated by a lot of people.

    Where it all Began

If we start by the history of logos it goes back much further than modern branding. Symbols and marks have been used for centuries to identify people, businesses, products, and organizations. The word “logo” comes from the Greek word logos, meaning “word” or “reason.” Modern logos became especially important during the Industrial Revolution, when businesses needed recognizable marks to distinguish their products in a growing marketplace.

    From Vision to Creation

Stickers also have a long history, becoming more popular as modern printing and adhesive technologies developed. They eventually became an inexpensive and effective way for businesses, artists, and individuals to promote ideas, brands, events, and communities.

    Behind the Design

When creating a logo or sticker today, there are many techniques involved. I usually begin with research, brainstorming, and rough sketches before moving into Illustrator. I experiment with geometric shapes, typography, colour, negative space, and line work. For stickers, I can also play with outlines, borders, textures, and different die-cut shapes. These techniques help create something that is both visually interesting and easy to recognize. Here are some example of stickers i made during my first semester at John Abbott College. I first started with a key idea that was unique to what i wanted to do and accomplish with this logo. Then, i started experimenting on the Color Palette and the message i wanted my logo to say without necessarily have any word to prove what my logo is showing.

Like describe earlier, what makes logos and stickers so powerful is their ability to communicate without needing many words. Think about the logos of major brands—you can often recognize them instantly just from their shape or symbol.

    Learning in Progress

In today’s world, where we constantly see advertisements and content online, a strong visual identity is more important than ever. Logos help brands become memorable, while stickers can turn designs into something people physically carry, share, and display.

As I continue studying graphic design, I’m learning that these small visual elements can have a surprisingly big impact.
